  75. If anyone has access to copies (or originals) of the frames where 
  76. light streaks appear, would you please contact me.

  78. It should be quite easy to tell the difference between exposure due to 
  79. electrical discharge and exposure due to reflected light of an 
  80. object. (with the originals) 
  81.  
  82. Telling the difference between light streaks due to movement of the 
  83. camera or due to fast moving objects is more difficult.  Here it will 
  84. be interesting to see the streak structure.  It would of course be 
  85. very difficult to produce extremely complex patterns ``painting 
  86. with streetlights'' as has been suggested. (originals might not be 
  87. necessary for this analysis).

  135. James, I have seen a file similar to the one you describe.  It will be  
  136. available on my BBS within a week or so, along with numerous similar papers  
  137. and, hopefully, schematics.

  139. Word is that concentric toroidal coils can work as described.  I have not  
  140. built one personally.  I am aware of one person who seems to have been  
  141. experimenting with them who suffered severe psychological sideeffects and  
  142. ultimately died as a result of a very unusual lab accident.  Similar  
  143. sideeffects are a matter of record in other high-energy pioneers, notably  
  144. Tesla.  In some circles, the word is that Jack Parsons was  
  145. fooling around with similar technologies at the time of his death.   My  
  146. point is that the danger attached toof the device seems to be quite real  
  147. and, worse, very unpredictable.  Fair warning.

  184. Alas, I have fallen into that trap that we all too often fall into. 
  185. That is, the trap of wanting to show how smart we are when a topic 
  186. comes up about which we know something.

  188. This is not a debating contest.  (Or, that is not the intent). 
  189. I was just seeking to impart information to this net.

  191. Correct me if I am wrong, but, a clarification, (as you have 
  192. correctly identified), does not necessitate invalidation.  I hope 
  193. that I did not imply that John's remarks are not valid.

  195. I think that points out another danger on the net, and particularly 
  196. on Paranet.  That is, people seeking to validate and invalidate. 
  197. In my opinion this is the trap that the holier-than-thou pedantic 
  198. skeptic continues to fall into (myself included). 
  199.  
  200. All too often we tend for convienience to polarize our data into 
  201. ``right'' and ``wrong'' when in fact it may be partly right and partly 
  202. wrong.  Unlike the hardcore skeptic, I suggest that we suspend judgement 
  203. for a while on some of these things that are in a gray area. 
  204. And there are so many things on Paranet that are neither black or white. 
  205.  
  206. As for your suggestion to discuss things in a ``gentlemanly fashion'' 
  207. I agree in principle with your statement, but would perhaps dust 
  208. off some of the patriarchal trimmings.  The use of the male gender 
  209. in text like this is probably inappropriate nowadays.

  263. PSYCHICS' PREDICTIONS FIZZLE FOR 1990

  265. Jackie Onassis did not marry the young rock star Jon Bon Jovi.  A 
  266. tidal wave did not flood Manhattan.  A meteorite did not land in 
  267. the White House Rose Garden, and a cure was not found for the 
  268. common cold.  These are just a few of the many predictions that 
  269. had been made for 1990 by famous "psychics", but were dead wrong, 
  270. as chronicled by the _Bay Area Skeptics_. 
  271.  
  272. At the end of each year, many well-known "psychics" issue 
  273. predictions for the coming year.  Twelve months later, they issue 
  274. another set of predictions, conveniently forgetting those they 
  275. made the year before, which are always nearly 100% wrong.  Each 
  276. year, however, the Bay Area Skeptics dig up the predictions made 
  277. the year before, to the embarrassment of those who made them. 
  278.  
  279. Many of the "psychic" predictions made are so vague that it is 
  280. impossible to say if they came true or not:  For example, Jeane 
  281. Dixon's prediction that "secrets will weigh heavily" on 
  282. Vice-President Dan Quayle is not obviously true or false.  Many 
  283. other "predictions" involve things that happen every year, or 
  284. else are not difficult to guess, such as hurricanes along the 
  285. Gulf Coast, marital strife for Charles and Diana, or terrorist 
  286. incidents.  Many "predictions" simply state that ongoing events 
  287. and trends will continue, such as economic uncertainty, or 
  288. conflict in the Middle East. 
  289.  
  290. Other supposed "predictions" are not really predictions at all, 
  291. but are actually disclosures of little-known events that are 
  292. already under way, such as movie productions, business ventures, 
  293. or developing scandals.  Because questionable claims of having 
  294. made an amazing prediction frequently are made in the wake of 
  295. major news stories, the Bay Area Skeptics only evaluates 
  296. predictions that were widely known before the events they claimed 
  297. to foretell.  While some predictions did of course come true, 
  298. especially those that were unspecific, or not at all difficult to 
  299. guess, not _one_ prediction that was both specific _and_ 
  300. surprision came true. 
  301.  
  302. The famous Washington, D.C. "psychic" Jeane Dixon, who supposedly 
  303. has a "gift of prophesy", predicted that George Bush's "greatest 
  304. challenge" would come this summer when he would be forced to make 
  305. "life-and-death decisions about troubles in Latin America and 
  306. China".  While those regions were relatively quiet this summer, 
  307. Dixon somehow failed to foresee Bush having any trouble with 
  308. Iraq.  "The worst stock market drop of the year will come in 
  309. mid-April", she predicted; it actually occurred from August 
  310. through mid-October.  She also warned that the West Coast "will 
  311. be shaken again by an October earthquake" which will "bring a 
  312. volcano to life" [_The Star_, Jan. 16, 1990].

  314. St. Louis "psychic" Beverly Jaegers, who claims to be able to 
  315. make accurate stock market predictions, predicted that defrocked 
  316. evangelist Jimmy Bakker would become a "hunted fugitive" after an 
  317. escape from prison, and that Madonna would get pregnant from an 
  318. affair with Pee-Wee Herman [_National Enquirer_, July 3, 1990].

  320. In Chicago, "psychic" Irene Hughes predicted that Jacqueline 
  321. Onassis would tie the knot with rock star Jon Bon Jovi, that 
  322. Bryant Gumbel would be fired from the "Today" show after an ugly 
  323. bar-room brawl, and that Chuck Norris would lead a group of 
  324. mercenaries in a successful attack on a Colombian drug field 
  325. [_National Enquirer_, Jan. 2, 1990].

  364. Los Angeles "psychic" Marie Graciette predicted that the largest 
  365. earthquake ever recorded would strike the sea bed near New York 
  366. City, sending in a tidal wave that would flood Manhattan 
  367. [_National Enquirer_, July 3, 1990].  A meteorite would land in 
  368. the White House Rose Garden, endangering the First Family by the 
  369. levels of radiation it emits.  (Meteorites are primarily made of 
  370. iron and nickel, which are not radioactive.)  She also predicted 
  371. that Japanese scientists would discover a cure for the common 
  372. cold while investigating the ink spewed out by squid [_National 
  373. Enquirer_, Jan. 2, 1990]. 
  374.  
  375. Southern Californian Clarisa Bernhardt, who claims to make 
  376. "incredibly accurate" earthquake predictions, foresaw that Barbra 
  377. Streisand would go to Cuba and wind up in a "sizzling" romance 
  378. with Fidel Castro [_National Enquirer_, July 3, 1990].  She also 
  379. predicted that the Major Leagues would have their first female 
  380. baseball player, whose skill would make her a superstar 
  381. [_National Enquirer_, Jan. 2, 1990]. 
  382.  
  383. Here in Northern California, "Psychic Astrologer" Terrie Brill of 
  384. Redwood City predicted five years ago [_San Francisco Examiner_, 
  385. Dec. 16, 1985] that 1990 would absolutely be the year that a 
  386. massive earthquake would reshape the California coastline.  "If 
  387. there was doubt [about this prediction], I'd say there was 
  388. doubt", she reaffirmed to the reporter.  This past December, she 
  389. predicted that Oprah Winfrey would marry, that Manuel Noriega 
  390. (who was then holed up in the Vatican Embassy in Panama) would be 
  391. released, but not to the United States, and would be killed by a 
  392. Panamanian before six months had passed [_San Francisco 
  393. Examiner_, Dec. 28, 1990].  Brill charges her clients $195 an 
  394. hour for predictions such as these.  Twelve months ago, Brill went 
  395. on record predicting an earthquake that would make the Bay Area 
  396. "fall into the ocean" during 1991 [_San Jose Mercury-News_, Jan. 
  397. 1, 1990], but in view of her previous dismal track record, the 
  398. Bay Area Skeptics see no cause for alarm. 
  399.  
  400. Based on the continuing failure of the "psychics" to make 
  401. accurate predictions over the years, the Bay Area Skeptics urge 
  402. everyone -- including the press -- to exercise some healthy 
  403. skepticism when "psychics" and other purveyors of the paranormal 
  404. make extraordinary claims or predictions.  Anyone who swallows 
  405. the "psychics'" claims year after year, without checking the 
  406. record, is setting a bad example for students and for the public. 
  407.  
  408. It is important to note that no "psychic" succeeded in predicting 
  409. the genuinely _surprising_ news stories of 1990:  the invasion 
  410. and occupation of Kuwait by Iraq; Hussein's holding of thousands 
  411. of foreign hostages as "human shields"; George Bush saying yes to 
  412. "new taxes"; and the stunning electoral defeat of the Sandinistas 
  413. in Nicaragua.  These major news stories were so unanticipated 
  414. that someone would have had to be truly "psychic" to have 
  415. predicted them.  Given the number of so-called "psychics" out 
  416. there, one would expect that at least a few of them would have 
  417. correctly predicted these -- unless, of course, all such claims 
  418. of "psychic powers" are without foundation. 
  419.  
  420. The _Bay Area Skeptics_ is a group of people from all walks of 
  421. life who support the critical examination of paranormal claims, 
  422. such as psychic powers, UFOs, astrology, Bigfoot, biorhythms, 
  423. etc.  Similar skeptics' organizations are active in many other 
  424. areas of the country, including Southern California, New York, 
  425. Colorado, Illinois, Arizona, Texas, and Ohio.  The Committee for 
  426. the Scientific Examination of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP) 
  427. is an international skeptics' organization, made up of many 
  428. famous writers, scientists, and investigators, such as Martin 
  429. Gardner, Stephen Jay Gould, James "The Amazing" Randi, Isaac 
  430. Asimov, and many others.  Similar skeptics' groups have also been 
  431. formed in many foreign countries, including Australia, Canada, 
  432. France, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and India.  These groups 
  433. cooperate in making their findings available to other 
  434. researchers, and to the public.

  515. could all write the major networks like 20/20 that has a vast  
  516. veiwing audience. These are the shows that won't show this type of  
  517. material because of reasons that are unknown to us. Hard Copy was  
  518. taken off the air at prime time in this area and is now shown at  
  519. 6:00 am in the morning. It has very little audience at this time.
